With the arrival of good weather, Spaniards are inaugurating the terrace season. This is evidenced by data provided by TheFork, the leading online reservation platform in Europe: so far this year, searches for restaurants with terraces have increased by 41% nationwide compared to 2019, the year before the pandemic, and by 4% compared to 2023, showcasing the growth of this trend year after year in our country.
These are the provinces with the highest percentage of terraces and rooftops According to TheFork data, the five provinces currently offering the highest percentage of these types of establishments in their dining options nationwide are Seville (68%), Girona (65%), Ibiza and Malaga (both at 65%), and finally Mallorca (61%).
Spaniards love terraces, and this has turned it into a full-fledged trend. As a result, the number of restaurants with terraces and rooftops has increased considerably.
More and more restaurants are offering terraces In this regard, TheFork has increased its portfolio of these types of establishments by 60% compared to before the pandemic; currently, 55% of its associated restaurants have an open space of this type, compared to 24% in 2019.
According to Javier Mendizábal, commercial and marketing director of Grupo Larrumba and Grupo Carbón, a company with several terraces in strategic areas of the capital, Madrid, such as El Jardín de la Fonda Lironda or Frida in Chueca, their season starts in May.
It is in this month that they switch from the “winter closed format to open to the sun, which is what customers want at this time of year. And the increase in terrace reservations in these spring months is nearly 30%,” explains Mendizábal.
